CTA (Call to Action)
A button, link, or instruction that directs users to take a specific desired action.
Full definition
A CTA is the element that tells users what to do next — 'Get a Free Quote', 'Start Your Trial', 'Download the Guide'. Effective CTAs are clear (specific about the benefit), urgent (time-sensitive language where appropriate), and prominent (high contrast, visible placement). CTA optimisation is a core element of CRO. Best practices include: using first-person language ('Get My Free Report' vs 'Get Your Free Report'), reducing friction (fewer words, clear value), testing placement and colour through A/B testing, and ensuring the CTA matches the user's stage in the funnel. Every page should have one primary CTA to avoid decision paralysis.
Real-world example
Changing a button from 'Submit' to 'Get My Free Analysis' increases click-through rate on a lead generation form from 3.2% to 7.8%.
