Conversion Rate

The percentage of visitors who complete a desired action — a purchase, sign-up, form fill — out of total visitors.

Full definition

Conversion rate is one of the most important metrics in digital marketing, measuring how effectively your traffic converts into outcomes. Calculated as: (Conversions ÷ Total Visitors) × 100. Conversion rates vary by type: e-commerce purchases average 2–4%, SaaS free trial sign-ups 5–10%, lead generation forms 5–15%. Even small improvements in conversion rate can dramatically impact business outcomes — going from 2% to 3% conversion effectively increases revenue by 50% with the same ad spend. CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation) uses A/B testing, UX research, heatmaps, and funnel analysis to systematically improve conversion rates across the site.

Real-world example

An insurance broker tests two versions of their quote form — a 12-field version versus a 4-field version. The short form achieves an 11.2% conversion rate versus 4.7% for the long form.
