Link Building

The process of acquiring hyperlinks from other websites to your own to improve search rankings.

Full definition

Link building is one of the most important off-page SEO activities. Search engines treat backlinks as votes of confidence — a link from a reputable website signals that the linked content is trustworthy and valuable. Effective link building strategies include: creating original research and data that journalists and bloggers cite, digital PR campaigns that earn press coverage, guest posting on relevant industry publications, broken link building (finding dead links on other sites and offering your content as a replacement), and building partnerships with complementary businesses. Quality matters more than quantity — links from authoritative, topically relevant domains carry far more weight than links from low-quality or unrelated sites.

Real-world example

A financial planning firm publishes an annual 'UK Household Finance Report' with original data. The report earns 120 backlinks from financial publications and national newspapers, significantly boosting organic rankings.
