Dark Social

Content shared privately (via messaging apps, email, or copy-paste) that analytics tools cannot attribute to a source.

Dark social refers to content sharing that happens through private channels — WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage, email, Slack — where standard UTM-based analytics cannot track the referral source. When someone copies a URL and pastes it into a WhatsApp group, the recipient's visit to that URL appears as 'direct' traffic in analytics. Dark social is thought to represent a significant majority of all content sharing (estimates range from 60–80%), meaning analytics dashboards dramatically undercount the true social impact of content. Marketing teams can partially address dark social by building branded short links for shareable content and by asking customers 'how did you hear about us?'.
