YouTube has over 2.5 billion monthly logged-in users. It's also the world's second-largest search engine — people search YouTube to learn, compare products, and evaluate services before buying. For businesses willing to invest in video, YouTube ads represent one of the most powerful and underutilised paid channels available.

YouTube ad formats: which one is right for your goal?

Skippable in-stream ads

These play before or during YouTube videos and can be skipped after 5 seconds. You only pay when someone watches 30 seconds (or the full video if shorter) or clicks your CTA. Skippable ads are ideal for brand awareness and storytelling — the skip option means you only pay for genuinely engaged viewers.

Non-skippable in-stream ads

15-second (occasionally 20-second) ads that cannot be skipped. Viewers must watch the full ad. These carry a CPM pricing model (you pay per 1,000 impressions). Use these for high-value brand messaging where you need guaranteed full exposure — product launches, time-sensitive offers, or brand awareness campaigns where frequency matters.

Bumper ads

6-second non-skippable ads designed for mobile and short attention spans. Bumper ads work best as part of a sequenced campaign — use them to reinforce messaging from longer ads or to maintain brand presence at low cost. They're CPM-priced and cheap at scale.

YouTube Search ads (video discovery ads)

These appear in YouTube search results and alongside related videos. A user searches for 'how to choose an SEO agency' and your video appears at the top of results. You pay per view (when someone clicks to watch). These are the highest-intent YouTube ad format — targeting people actively searching for your category.

Targeting: the real advantage of YouTube ads

YouTube runs through Google Ads, which means you get access to Google's audience data — one of the richest targeting datasets in advertising. Key targeting options:

  • Customer Match — upload your email list and target existing customers or lookalikes
  • In-market audiences — Google identifies users actively researching your category
  • Custom intent audiences — target people who've searched specific keywords on Google
  • YouTube channel and video placements — show ads before specific competitors' content or industry channels
  • Life events — target around major decisions (moving home, starting a business, getting married)
  • Demographic + interest combinations — layer targeting for precision

The hook problem: why most YouTube ads fail

On skippable ads, you have 5 seconds before the viewer can skip. Everything about your ad's success depends on those 5 seconds. Most brands fail this test by: opening with their logo, starting with a slow product shot, or beginning with a question that doesn't immediately connect to the viewer's specific interest.

What works: open with the problem or the outcome. 'If your Google Ads are burning money without results—' or 'Most law firm websites are designed for lawyers, not clients.' These hooks call out a specific audience, state a pain point, and create the instant tension that makes viewers want to keep watching.

Measurement: what to track for YouTube

  • View-through conversions: conversions from users who saw your ad but didn't click (requires Google Ads conversion tracking)
  • Brand lift studies: surveys shown to test vs. control groups measuring ad recall, brand awareness, and purchase intent
  • CPV (cost per view): efficiency metric — under $0.05 is strong for skippable ads
  • VTR (view-through rate): percentage who watch past the skip point — industry average 25–40%
